Imiloa, which means "explorer" in Hawaiian, is a program designed to allow children to explore the nature and current conditions of Hawaii in a relaxed atmosphere after a three-year period of kolona self-restraint, and to experience their growth when they return home.

We are accepting applications from new 3rd grade elementary school students through 3rd grade high school students (3rd grade and younger students are negotiable). Families are welcome to accompany their children, but since local activities will be separate, please consult with us in advance if you wish to participate in the same program.

Witnessing the crisis of the animals and thinking of solutions

Hawaii is one of the world's most popular resort destinations and a favorite among the Japanese.

However, Hawaii is not immune to climate change and environmental problems, such as seawater pollution from domestic wastewater and plastic debris, and wildlife such as green sea turtles (honu), bonefish, and other species whose lives are in danger.

Hawaii's commitment to sustainable tourismIn line with the SDGs, Hawai'i Green Growth UN Local 2030 has established six goals, including a shift to green energy and environmental education, and is working to achieve them.

This study tour will also use the ecology of wildlife in Hawaii as a starting point to learn about the reality of animals living in the midst of plastic waste and the ongoing destruction of nature, and to consider how we can solve the problem.

Study environmental issues based at the University of Hawaii

The 6-day/4-night tour will follow the schedule below (subject to change depending on Corona and local conditions).

• Friday, March 31...Depart Haneda Airport in the evening → Arrive Honolulu, Hawaii in the morning → Learn about Hawaii's history and ocean pollution at the Bishop Museum → Visit the Consul General of Japan in Hawaii → Overnight stay and orientation at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
• April 1 (Saturday)...Interaction with dolphins and honu (turtles) on western Oahu, lecture on marine pollution → Reflection, workshop, and search for solutions at the University of Hawaii student dormitory
• April 2 (Sunday)... "TheAloha Oceans Plusand coastal trash collection → Reflection, workshop and solution presentation at the University of Hawaii dormitory
• April 3 (Monday)...Tour of the University of Hawaii Marine Biological Laboratory → Presentation on solutions to the garbage problem at the University of Hawaii → Shopping and hotel stay in Waikiki
• Tuesday, April 4...Morning: Shopping in Waikiki → Afternoon: Departure from Oahu
• Wednesday, April 5...Night/arrival at Haneda Airport

On the first day, visitors will learn about Hawaii's history and nature at the Bishop Museum, Hawaii's largest museum, and gather information about plastic trash and wildlife.

After that, we will visit the Consul General of Japan in Hawaii, where the Ambassador will give us a lecture on the origins of Hawaii. It will be a rare opportunity to receive a lecture directly from the Ambassador at the Embassy.

On the second day, we will go to the western part of Oahu, also known as the sacred island of Hawaii. There will be a chance to interact with wild marine life and a lecture on the realities of marine pollution.

Encounter wild dolphins, turtles, and if you are lucky, whales!

In front of animals living in nature, children will be confronted with environmental issues as their own, about the serious effects of human marine pollution.Through this experience of learning about social issues in an exploratory way, it may be an opportunity to find a dream for the future.

Realization that the world is connected

On the third day, we will collect trash from the coastal area with a local nature conservation group. This area is normally inaccessible because it is a protected area, but this time we will have a special opportunity to experience the collection work. In addition, participants will learn about research methods using trash from oceanography specialists and try their hand at creating artwork from the trash they collect.

In fact,The experience made us realize that the world is connected and that environmental problems are issues that all countries and regions should work together to address.This should be the case.

On the fourth day, they will finally go to the University of Hawaii to present their solutions to an assistant professor of the Department of Marine Biology. If the children are able to complete the presentation in English, which is difficult even in Japanese, their sense of self-esteem will be greatly enhanced!

In the evening, shopping and dining in Waikiki. It's time to reward yourself for learning so much.

Location】Oahu, Hawaii
Target] 3rd grade elementary school students to 3rd grade high school students (consultation required for students under 3rd grade; parents may also participate)
