GLI is now offering summer school at each of its schools starting in mid-August.
This is the first season school to be held at the Hiroo School,Report on the Hiroo School Summer SchoolI will do so.
Hiroo School moved to its current location and opened last spring. The number of students has increased, and for the first time this summer, we will be holding a seasonal school!

First, we introduce ourselves to each other and our fellow adventurers who will be with us for two days. Next, we learn new vocabulary related to boats. The words are then pronounced repeatedly through games such as bowling, while moving their bodies.
Each student is given a handmade notebook to use during the summer school. On the "My Boat" page, they drew a boat of their choice.
The main activities of the day were a paper craft of the Nippon Maru, which will be explored the next day, and making knots for the ship. Knots are rope work that is indispensable for ships, such as connecting a ship to a pier, anchors, and various other parts of a ship. Participants made a total of four types of "knots" while listening to explanations, and pasted them in their notebooks.
In making paper crafts, students' unique methods of making the paper crafts are often seen! It is fun to see the ingenuity of the students!
Instructor Queen's Comments
On the 1st day, we assembled our boats! That was a fun activity. The activity was a test of patience and perseverance. Playing with new friends was truly good. |

The Nippon Maru was assembled yesterday, and when we finally saw the real thing, we were excited by its size and beauty!
For example, the nut that holds the anchor is called "butterfly," and the short handle that fastens the iron door is called "dog. There are 19 of them posted on the ship! Working together with our friends, we found these animals.
It was hot, but everyone did their best!
Instructor Queen's Comments
It was a very hot day but they were able to finish the mission at the "Sail Training Ship Nippon Maru in Yokohama. They tried to dock the ship with a virtual experience and moved the big containers from the cargo ship. The word for the day was "Mission Complete". |

After that, the various games were very heated! Especially in the game of making paper cup plastic midges, more than competing in speed,It is important to discuss and cooperate in pairs. All teams successfully completed their pyramids through discussion and trial and error.
The last activity of the day was to make flowerpots out of plastic bottles and sow plant seeds in them.
Cut a plastic bottle into the shape of an animal, make a hole in it (these two processes were done by the instructor/staff because of the risk of cutting their hands), and paint it with acrylic paint to complete the process.
We filled the pots with soil with shovels and sowed flower and vegetable seeds. Everyone was happy to show us their finished pots!
Finally, we will present what we have learned today in English!
Instructor Queen's Comments
They recycled some plastic bottles and made a useful pot for planting. They tried to have a creative plant pot by creating it into animal figures and painting it creatively. Some students planted some vegetables and beautiful flower seeds. |
The second day's field trip will be to the Yumenoshima Tropical Botanical Garden. Visitors can see tropical plants, including endemic species and insectivorous plants of the Ogasawara Islands.
It was raining heavily in the morning, so we adjusted our time and set out.
The high-ceilinged greenhouse is filled with palm trees and the sound of waterfalls. It is like a jungle.
The mission for the day was to find all the plants and other items whose pictures appeared in the notebook, and to record what we saw, heard, smelled, and touched. Teams worked together to find them.
On this all-last day, the participating members were handed certificates of participation!
Instructor Queen's Comments
On our last day, it was raining but they were able to reach the goal of visiting a greenhouse garden. They were amazed at the plants they have seen. mission has been completed.
At last, we finished the summer with bright smiles seen on students' faces. They want to do more! Everyone is welcome! |
What GLI values through its events
GLI is an English language school that is dedicated to the development of "global skills". We believe that it is important to find and explore not only English, but also something you love to do and something you can truly devote yourself to.
To do this, you need a lot of seeds of interest. But simply going to a new place and looking at things for the first time is not a strong enough experience to remain with you.
We would like to continue to create events that make people want to see more, want to know more, and create opportunities. We would like to continue to create such events in the future.
We hope to see you at our next event!
