Parents Study Group "Benefit from being able to speak English."

Hello, this is Kaburaki, GLI representative.

A study session for parents was held on Sunday, March 7. The theme was.English proficiency is a boon."It was.

This time with a slightly different twist,Invite two guests."I benefited from being able to speak English."We asked about their experiences.

The first,Dr. Shikayama is a current GLI instructor.

From elementary school to junior high school, he attended Gunma International Academy in Gunma Prefecture, a general school but with classes taught in English, and went on to Maebashi High School for high school. After one year of study, he was accepted into the medical school of the Jikei University School of Medicine, the second most difficult private medical school after Keio University.

He is an Eiken Level 1 holder and helps us with Eiken preparation, workshops for other junior high and high school students on study and higher education, and a "self-study room" where he gives advice on how to study and do other things besides English.

His profound explanations in English as well as mathematics, physics, and chemistry are based on his extensive study of the subject, and he removes the causes of problems by going into the way of thinking and tackling problems before they can be solved or not. He is very popular among students.

He is.Received EIKEN Level 2 in elementary school and Level 1 in junior high school. Then,I hardly studied for English examinations during high school and university entrance exams. He said.

On the contrary, he says he was able to pass Jikei's medical school after only one year because he did not have to study English.

For your information, the subjects of the examination are "English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics".I was able to focus on all three subjects except English, and that's why I passed. He said.

When asked if he had studied grammar and writing at an English conversation school since his early grades, he replied that he had studied grammar and writing at an English conversation school using DLR, a textbook used by the local school. (Incidentally, this English conversation school was hosted by Ayumu Sensei of GLI.)

This story is right on target,Students spend much of their time studying for entrance exams on English. For private liberal arts courses, one subject from English, modern literature + ancient literature + Chinese literature, Japanese geography, history, and civics, so most students spend 50-60% of their time on English.

If English study is no longer required of the three subjects, experience shows that the remaining two subjects can be prepared quite well in one year of senior year.

It is also no exaggeration to say that whether or not you can get the school of your choice depends on your English.

English is also said to be a subject where a few years of preparation can be limiting. If you acquire full-fledged 4-skills English proficiency from an early age, you will have a really easy time taking the exam.

The second person is Mori.

He entered a very ordinary IB (International Baccalaureate) school in Japan, but when he realized that it was far from what was explained at the school information session, he left his high school in Japan and went to England by himself.

I had a foreign roommate pull a knife on me within a week of coming to England, I did not have GCSEs in subjects that the school said I had, and finally, when I realized that there was no point in studying abroad in Corona if it was online, I took a leap of faith, passed the UWC ISAC again, and returned home. I was able to pass the UWC ISAC again and returned to my home country.

He, too, had been studying English since the first grade of elementary school, which is why he chose the career path he did.

ISAC is the first IB boarding school in Japan that attracts students from all over the world. Students come from all over the world to attend this popular school, and the ratio of students who are accepted is over 8 times. The question was,I don't know about you, but I was just being honest about myself,And.

I had dinner with him a year and a half ago when I left Japan, and I was surprised by his calmness and the words that came out of his mouth, as well as his dignified response.

Probably not many Japanese high school students today can speak in public like that.

The subjects of the ISAC exam are an English essay and an interview. The question was the quintessential IB school philosophy, "Who Are You?" which is the quintessential idea of IB schools.

What have you been through, what have you thought about in the process, and what can you bring to the school by enrolling? It's like a job interview. It's like a job interview.

A question with no answer indeed. I hear that the local school exams in the UK are similar.I wonder if it is only in Japan - that people are trained incessantly on how to solve problems that have answers!

The last part of the meeting was from me to reality.''It is beneficial to be able to speak English,'' the story of the examination. This is true for high school entrance exams, but even more so for college entrance exams.

The reality is that many universities have an English proficiency test level 2 as an application requirement for the Comprehensive Type Selection. Many famous universities require an interview and an essay as entrance examination subjects other than English.

In fact, some of the famous private universities I mentioned above require only an interview and an essay to be accepted or rejected, and the ratio of applicants to applicants is 2 to 3 times! The ratio of applicants to general applicants at famous private universities is over 5 times, so it is really a very economical way to take the entrance examination,Comprehensive selection is always shunned. It is.

The reason.Because you can't take measures in high school! But the measures are quite simple! I think the answer was found in what they told us today.

In the future, GLI will alsoMeasures for Comprehensive SelectionWe will make it a required class for middle and high school students, so please contact us if you would like to hear more details.

These abilities will definitely grow if they are trained for many years, and they will also be useful in the future, so I think it is meaningful and significant to learn them.

Also,General selection also exempts applicants who hold Level 1 from the English exam or converts it to 100 points.I think it is a good idea. This means thatWhat kind of study and examination would be most efficient and effective? We also talked about the following.

Regardless, Japan's past examinations have been based on the five-subject system, but think about the examinations,With only English, writing and presentation skills, and a little experience in other activities, students can be accepted to famous universities both in Japan and abroad.

A complete time saver! And it will be useful in the future. You can also devote your spare time to your favorite activities.

The more you immerse yourself, the more likely you are to pass the more comprehensive selection process. It's a good thing, indeed, but...,

It's something I always talk about,It is up to the parents to choose which education they prefer. It is.

What future is coming? What abilities will be necessary in that future? I believe that the ability of parents to envision such a future will determine the future of their children.

So, in any case,

"Understand that it's not what it used to be!"

I recommend that you do the same. Education and examinations have really changed a lot.

In the latter half of the individual consultation, we talked more specifically about where to spend the money for education and how to design education and higher education to be more effective and beneficial for children both educationally and in terms of entrance examinations.

Depending on your approach, it may be easier to get into a famous overseas university with a high world university ranking than into the University of Tokyo.

But it is.Talk about if you can speak English. However, this is not to say that if you can only speak English, you can get in. However, it is not the case that you can get in if you can only speak English.

It is more likely if we strengthen what we strengthen while moderating the Japanese education.

So,There is no need to enroll students in an intermediary school from the first grade to improve their English skills, or to enroll them in cram school from the third grade to study hard for entrance examinations.

All of these cost a great deal of money. If you are going to spend the same amount of money on education, I would suggest that you choose the more effective path for the same amount of money. 、、、、

We hope that you understand that things are different from the past and that you will lead your children to happiness.
