Q:Where are you from?
I’m from the town of Thomasville, Georgia in the USA. It’s a small town, but I love the open spaces of the countryside. My home is out in the sticks, so it’s quiet and a very calming place
Q:What have you studied, and what kind of experience do you have?
In college, I studied international business. I really enjoyed learning about different perspectives and cultures in business. I have experience teaching at other English after school programs in Japan for 3 years, and I love getting to know the students and interacting with them.
Q:How would you describe your personality? What are your hobbies and favorite things?
My hobbies include reading, playing games, and traveling in Japan. I’m not a big fan of planes, so I love taking the train to new places! I’m quite easygoing in class, and I prefer to talk to the students as person to person, rather than teacher to student.
Q:What inspired you to become a teacher, and why did you want to teach English to children?
When I was in college, I would often help Japanese exchange students with studying. I enjoyed seeing the differences in learning style between cultures, and how we can relate to each other, and how people’s eyes light up when they make the connection from an English word to their native language.
Q:What do you value most when teaching your lessons?
In my lessons, I want everyone to feel comfortable and have fun. When students are enjoying themselves, they don’t even realize they’re learning. I love to joke with the students in English, and see how they respond in kind. But there’s a time to be serious too!
Q:How do you support children who are nervous or lack confidence in English?
Many children show low confidence in English, especially in group lessons where students can vary in level. Its important to remember everyone starts small, and praise the small steps students take towards learning. A single word today can turn into full sentences before too long.
Q:What do you like about GLI, and what would you like to achieve here in the future?
I really like GLI events! We do so many events where kids can experiences amazing things like indoor-skydiving and making mosaic art, and especially our Summer and Spring camps where Japanese students can meet students from all around the world! It’s such a great experiences.
Q:What advice would you give children to help them enjoy learning English?
Don’t be afraid of mistakes! Its how we learn. Everyone has trouble learning a new language, but if we keep trying, we will slowly get better. It won’t happen in one day, but don’t give up!
Q:Finally, please share a message for our students and their parents.
Starting something new can be scary, but all the teachers here at GLI want to help you succeed in your goals. The students around you are learning right alongside you, so let’s keep learning together and have fun!
