GLI Online hosted a one-day summer school event on July 25, 2023.

This year's theme is here↓.

Beyond Borders: A Cultural and Sustainable Summer School Experience"

Several children from the Philippines also participated in the event.

The event featured a variety of activities.

We also discussed two of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 2: Zero Hunger and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

The highlight of the event was a cooking class held as part of learning about common school treats in both countries.

All participants were enthusiastic about making "halo-halo," a type of Filipino shaved ice.

The other memorable exchange was when one of the participants mentioned the word "mottainai," which originated in Japan. This word is used by environmentalists to mean "to spare waste," right?

I think it is important to confront issues related to Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 12, not only in Japan and the Philippines, but around the world.

Specific practices considered through the event

Here are some simple and practical ways to achieve Goal 2: Zero Hunger and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production:

1. reduce, reuse, and recycle:

Reduce waste, reuse items whenever possible, and recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

2. mindful shopping:

Before buying, consider whether you really need the item and whether it will meet your long-term needs. Avoid impulse purchases and choose quality products that will last.

3. repair and maintenance:

Instead of discarding broken items, consider repairing them. Proper maintenance can extend the life of your possessions.

4. sharing and donation:

If you no longer use an item but it is still in good condition, consider giving it to a friend or family member or donating it to a charity.

5. meal planning:

Plan meals in advance to avoid food waste. Buy only the amount of ingredients you need and use leftovers in creative new dishes.

6. portion control:

Serve meals in proper portions, minimize leftovers, and avoid throwing away excess food.

7. use of leftovers:

Use leftovers without waste by getting creative and incorporating them into new dishes. Many dishes can be turned into snacks or lunch the next day.

8. composting:

If you have food scraps or organic waste, consider starting a composting operation. Composting can turn waste into nutrient-rich soil.

9. energy savings:

Be mindful of your energy use. Turn off lights, appliances, and electronics when not in use to conserve energy and reduce utility bills.

10. reduce the use of paper:

Choose digital documents and email whenever possible to reduce paper waste.

11. bring your own bag and container:

When going shopping, bring reusable bags and containers to reduce the use of disposable plastic bags and packaging.

12. water conservation:

Be mindful of your water use. Fix leaks early, use water-saving fixtures, and avoid wasting water.

13. eco-friendly transportation:

Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from private vehicles by walking, biking, and using public transportation.

14. purchase of used equipment:

Breathe new life into your products and reduce the demand for new products by buying used products or shopping at recycle stores.

15. education and awareness:

Share the concept of "mottainai" with friends and family to become more aware and promote a sustainable lifestyle.

By incorporating these activities into our daily lives, we can actively contribute to waste reduction, resource conservation, and the spirit of "mottainai.

Even small efforts can be effective if they are accumulated steadily.
