Following the previous seminar,Guest speaker: people involved in the Mindanao Children's Library (MCL)to learn more about MCL.

 

MCL is an NGO corporation based in Mindanao, Philippines.Founded by Tomo Matsui, a children's literature scholar, to support children and their families affected by the ongoing conflict in Mindanao and children suffering from poverty, the company provides support in a variety of ways, including picture book reading activities, medical support, and schooling support.We are delivering the

 

This time, we are pleased to have you here,Ms. April Lynn Matsui.andMr. Harley Quinn.It is.

April Lynn is from Mindanao, and after experiencing poor student days herself, she founded MCL with Tomo Matsui. Ms. Queen is a well-known GLI teacher who became a teacher with the support of MCL!

 

I asked the students who always take Ms. Queen's lessons what kind of teacher she usually is. They are very cheerful! She has a wonderful smile! They said, "She is very cheerful!

 

In this issue.Their life stories and impressions of JapanWe asked them about such matters as the following.

 

Mindanao to Japan

Since the age of seven, Aprillyn has worked and attended school, selling vegetables and doing laundry.

 

Ms. Queen also lost her father when she was 11 years old, and after that she went to school while helping her family and relatives in their rice fields and working in the school cafeteria. It was impressive to hear her talk with her usual cheerful expression, even though she said that planting rice was hard work because she was bitten by many leeches.

(Explanation: I will show you the slides used on the day. In Mindanao, it seems to be the norm for children to work on farms like this.)

 

Also,What surprised April Lynn when she came to Japan?Why do you want to go to school? What do you want to become by going to school? and "What do you want to be when you go to school", but no answers came back.I hear that.

 

Why do you want to go to school? What do we say when people ask us "Why do you want to go to school?

 

Most children in Mindanao are,"Because I want to help my parents and siblings."They say.

 

Children living in rural areas have to walk several hours over such a steep road because their schools are far away, but they are still very much looking forward to going to school.Because being able to attend school is a blessing in itself.

And they areThey are attending school with financial aid from MCL and fulfilling their respective dreams.

 

April Lynn started an NGO to help children in similar situations, and Queen fulfilled a dream she had had since the age of three to become a teacher.

To the two of you.What did you learn from this experience?"He said that the question "What is the best way to do it?"Be grateful for what you have" and "Never stop dreaming."He replied.

 

I was surprised to learn that the unfailingly cheerful teacher I usually take lessons from has such a life story, but I hope that through these encounters, students will have experiences that will make them question their own norm.

 

GLI will continue to provide a forum for people to learn about the world, why learn English, and what we can do to help. What can we do for ourselves? We will continue to hold many events to find the answers to these questions.
