2025First field trip to Chinatown!

Hello.

This is Aya from GLI Online.

This year's annual field trip was to Yokohama's Chinatown, which is bustling with people during the Chinese New Year celebration.

Yokohama Chinatown is the largest Chinatown in Japan.

Once you step into the area, the aroma of authentic Chinese food wafts through the air, and the stores selling authentic Chinese products in a variety of colors make you feel as if you are really in China.

Such an exotic town is very popular not only with domestic tourists but also with international visitors!

And this is the season for Chinese New Year celebrations!

Unusual decorations adorn the streets, creating an even more lively and festive mood.

If we could talk with many foreigners during such a field trip interview in "Yokohama Chinatown" during the Chinese New Year, it might be a good opportunity to learn about the differences between Chinese New Year and Japanese New Year, and even more about New Year in other countries!

We have a lot of people from each school building participate in our field trips each time,

What is a field trip? If you are wondering, check out this report.

Research and practice well in advance!

Prior to each field trip, a pre-study will be conducted.

So far, I've used the time before departure to do 90 minutes of pre-departure study, but this time I'll be doing online lessons the day before.

We will take our time to research our destination, Yokohama Chinatown.

We will then dig deeper into the questions we have and what we want to know more about.

In the past, I had prepared for the trip by researching the location, creating an interview in English, and practicing through role-plays, but I was still nervous about the actual interview and sometimes forgot what I had practiced.

So this time, we will take plenty of time to study in advance the day before and practice English on the day of the interview, so that we can take on the interview with confidence and poise.

GLI events are always attended by students from Hiroo, Harumi, Musashi-Kosugi, and Online schools, as well as non-students, so most of us meet each other for the first time at events.

Even those who were a little nervous when they first arrived at the meeting, through this "pre-learning" session, they are becoming more and more familiar with each other.

Participating in a field trip...

How did GLI get started with field trips?

I want them to actually use the English they learn in the classroom.

I want you to know how fun it is to communicate in English.

I want you to be confident in speaking English.

That is to say.

And after actually participating in the event, the children told us

I was embarrassed at first, but it became more and more fun.

I was happy because I could understand even though I wasn't confident in my pronunciation.

I'm glad I took the challenge, even if I made a mistake.

Positive changes are felt every time, such as

If you are participating in a field trip for the first time, or if you are new to English, this experience is a great way to learn more about the

I hope you will feel the joy of using English more and more.

Furthermore, for those who are "a little more advanced," "Using English is fun!" Not only,

By researching tourist attractions and taking on the challenge of guiding, we hope that they will learn more about Japan and other countries, and see what kind of attractions there are, as well as what kind of differences and problems they face.

Finally, the presentation!

The thrill is only at the beginning. After the very exciting interview, we return to the classroom for a feedback session.

They will discuss what they liked about each other's interviews, give each other advice on how to do more, and summarize their interviews so that they can present their findings.

I'm glad I was able to say it out loud.

It was great that he was able to say "Thank you" at the end.

He was calling out to them in a very dignified manner.

We find out what was good about each other's interviews, such as

The presentation time is a bit nerve-wracking for the presenters as their families will be able to see their presentations, but accomplishing it will give them even more confidence.

Participant's Voice

Here are some comments we received from parents of those who participated in our last field trip.

I would like to participate again because I felt a sense of accomplishment and made new friends.

I was nervous about asking the questions in the wrong order, but I enjoyed it more than that.

I was able to experience a sense of accomplishment and fun together because I took on the challenge not alone, but with my friends.

He was very happy to talk about his field trip! She had a twinkle in her eye and said that she had done very well and had a lot of fun.

. I came back with a higher sense of self-esteem.

He made friends right away. She was also happy that she was able to interview with the students on her own initiative.

It's only a day, a few hours experience, but you will come away not only with a "fun! but you'll come home with a look of confidence and a piqued curiosity ✨.
