Report on [Dr. Takatsuki's Lecture] Report

Why do people from all over the world come to Eton College, a prestigious public school in England?

What is different about Japanese education?

Why do wealthy people go abroad?

,,

It was Dr. Takatsuki's lecture on Wednesday, February 19 that helped me understand this.

On the day of the event

The speaker will of course be from the Eton College Japan Office.Sohei Takatsuki.Teacher.

Eton College" is probably the name everyone knows. One of the five most prestigious boarding schools in the worldIt is.

Eton College

He is recognized by the school as a "Sole Agent" and is the only person in Japan who can coordinate Eton's summer school.

The number of sons of political and business figures who have attended Eton's summer school under his coaching cannot be contained in double digits, and the beauty of Eton is nothing less than the British public school education he was attracted to decades ago.

UK Public Schools are not public schools. In the UK, "private middle and high schools" are called public schools.

And not just a private middle or high school,Private boarding school based on education for the whole personThe first is the "The 9". The most prestigious are "The 9," or Eton, Harrow, Rugby, and other nine schools.

Inside Eton

The most distinctive feature of British public schools is "education for the whole person"

What is the education of the whole person?Studies, sports, arts, and extracurricular activities are all equally emphasized, and the goal is to create a person.

On the contrary,How can we develop "respectable" people? It can be said that this form was created through repeated educational exploration of the

It is not an exploration of decades, but of centuries. Through sports, through the arts, through theater, through extracurricular activities, we develop the qualities and abilities necessary for a person.

In the process, all kinds of sports such as soccer, rugby, badminton, golf, and tennis were born from British public schools.

The second feature is boarding.

Students are also guided in their daily lives through dormitory life. Dozens of students live in the dormitories in vertically divided groups, and a housemaster (housemaster) usually stays in the dormitory with his/her family. The housemaster has full authority over dormitory life, often to a degree second only to the principal.

It is called "Pastoral Care" in English,It means teaching with an intimacy equal to or greater than the love that parents pour into their children, even when they are away from their parents.

Imagine that.

In Japan these days, it is not easy to provide discipline and education at home, but the matron does it for us.

In addition, the houses frequently hold various competitions among themselves, which the children say burn more than school events.

They are very protective of their House fame and are more like brothers than siblings, spending time together from the age of 13 until the age of 18 at the most.

This creates a much greater intimacy with friends who have become close friends while studying abroad from college,A truly one-of-a-kind relationship is created. It is a

And when it comes to prestigious schools,House and room with world-class celebritiesSo the tuition is high, but you get more value for your money.

The last thing I want to passionately tell you is that

It is the quality of the teachers and the teacher-student ratio.

Teachers have at least a graduate degree, and it is not uncommon to find teachers with doctoral degrees. There are also Nobel Prize candidates and professionals in their field, such as those who have competed in the Olympics.

Also,At most a dozen people per teacher. In the case of a student who is recognized as especially gifted, such a teacher will give one-on-one lessons to the student. In some schools, the so-called 3-company meeting, all subject teachers report on the students' learning in their subjects.

Because of the small number of people,Teachers know every student in detail. The company is doing this.

I have always believed that education is

I have said that it is a "dialogue between teacher and student." In other words, it is not one teacher talking to 40 people about a certain subject or attitude toward life,Evaluation and advice regarding a single 00They do the following.

It is easy to understand if you imagine the Japanese educational scene. In Japan, the teacher speaks one-sidedly to 40 students (in the case of a high school). That is because it is never to Mr. 00 alone,It is not advice that I would give as an individual.

Unfortunately, in Japan, the teacher's words are helpful but do not resonate with me.

Imagine that.A Nobel Prize nominee in physics offers advice on learning physics exploration.

An Eton graduate who received such an education is now interning at GLI, hoping to spend a gap year in Japan, relying on Mr. Takatsuki.

He is going to the Geography Department at Oxford this August.

There is much more to talk about, and I encourage you to ask him questions. I think middle and high school students in particular will find him helpful.

What do they think, how do they learn, and what do they think about the future?
