【イベントレポート】YBSウイークエンド留学

昨年初めて実施されたYBS（横須賀バイリンガルスクール）へのウイークエンド留学。

3月20日、待ちに待った2度目の「ウイークエンド留学」が実施されました。

前回のイベントで、「初めての留学体験」をしたGLIの子どもたち。

「バイリンガルスクールの雰囲気に圧倒された」

「英語で話かけるのはドキドキしたけど、友達ができてうれしかった」

「次はもっと仲良くなりたい！」

など、「留学体験」を通じていろいろな思いが芽生えました。

YBSへ到着！

今回参加してくれたのは中学生のインターンを含め、１０人。

午前中はYBSの授業に参加します。

年長さん〜5年生の生徒たちはレベルに合わせたそれぞれのクラスへ。

教室に入ると前回のイベントを覚えてくれていたYBSの生徒さんたちは口々に

「覚えているよ！」「今日は何のアクティビティをするの？」「楽しみにしていたよ！」

とフレンドリーに声をかけてくれました。

レベル別のクラスでは、日本語を学ぶYBSの生徒さんと一緒に詩の朗読をしたり、インターンの中学生は時には先生役となってYBSの生徒さんのサポートを行いました。

YBSの授業に参加することで、積極的に先生の質問に答えたり、自分から意見を述べ、主張する、

リアルな「アメリカのコミュニケーション環境」を体験しました。

日本の学校とは違う雰囲気に少しびっくりしたかもしれません。

「留学中」はもちろん、昼食や休憩時間もYBSの生徒さんたちと過ごします。

一緒にサッカーをしたり、ピアノを弾いたりと思い思いに交流を深めていました。

午後はスポーツデイ！

午後は楽しみにしていたアクティビティタイム！

YBSとGLIの生徒が4人一組のチームとなって、スポーツ・アクティビティを行いました。

サックレース、スプーンレース、二人三脚、そしてこの時期ならではのエッグハント。

みんなで体を動かしている時は、授業の時の緊張もすっかり解け、みんなとってもいい笑顔！

新しくできた友達と協力してレースに勝った時にはお互いの絆が深まったようでした。

エッグハントでは庭に隠された４０個の卵をみんな夢中になって探しました。

たくさん探し出した子が、卵を見つけられない子に自分の卵を分けてあげたりと、ここでも

お互いを思いやる姿を見ることができました。

放課後も「留学体験」は続きます

全ての授業、アクティビティのあとは、放課後！

放課後（アフタースクール）もしっかり「留学」を楽しみます。

昼休憩に盛り上がったサッカーをまたやりたくて一目散に屋外に走り出して行った子。

教室内でお友達と一緒に工作をしている子、カードゲームを楽しむ子。

数人の仲間でオリジナルのクラブ会員証を作る子・・・などクリエイティブに、アクティブに

みんな思い思いにYBSでの残りの時間を過ごしていました。

帰りの電車の中では、「次ＹＢＳに行くのはいつなの？」「今度はほんとの留学みたいに泊まりたいよ！」「楽しかった！」という声がたくさん聞こえてきました。

英語での授業など、もちろん英語力を伸ばすための「留学体験」ではありますが

英語そのものよりも、様々なバックグラウンドを持つお友達がいる環境の中で

何を感じ、自分がどう振る舞うのか、まわりとどう関わるのか？ということを考えるよい機会となりました。

YBSとの交流は2024年度も定期的に行っていく予定です。ぜひ次回のご参加をお待ちしています。

GLI returns to Yokosuka in our second interschool event!

On 3/20, GLI students returned to Yokusuka for the second time to join our friends at Yokosuka Bilingual School for a special day of classes and activities. We were greeted by an excited group of 3rd and 4th graders, many familiar faces, and some new ones. They remembered us for the fun engineering event we conducted last year in November, and were eager to see what we had planned for this time. Our students who had participated in the previous event, felt more comfortable the second time around and the new participants quickly adjusted to the new classroom environment. It was clear that the seeds of friendship had been made and were starting to sprout.

In the morning, we joined their regular classes separated by age. Our students experienced the communicative environment of an American school. Students were actively answering the teachers questions and volunteering to share their opinions. We experienced different types of classes including homeroom, English language classes and Japanese class. Our interns supported and acted as helpers and even teachers. All of the interns who joined did a fantastic job taking great care of not only GLI students but YBS students as well.
During lunch, students ate in the classrooms and played outside.
In the afternoon, GLI led a sports activity ( a series of races and an egg hunt ) in which YBS and GLI students worked in teams of 4. It was a good way for them to make friends together, through teamwork. The events were so fun, you could see a smile on everyone’s face! There was a moment of bonding when the team won a race. Through their collective effort with new friends, they were able to make a good memory.

In the afternoon we joined the after school program and students could play freely. Students from both schools enjoyed playing together. Some played soccer, some played piano, others played with puzzles or made crafts inside. There was even a small club, called SYSOP (shock yourself on purpose), who enjoyed using static electricity to get a small shock when they touched the door handle. They graciously let us join their club. There was a lot of creativity and fun happening in the afterschool session.

Being in this environment gave our students many more chances to speak and be immersed in English, so it was a very good opportunity for them.

I would definitely recommend joining us the next time we visit. For students, and also for interns, it is a great experience!
